Annnnnnnnd, potentially looking to buy a car again. I miss the freedom, and the fun, but am looking for something sub 5k, that’ll be decent with insurance and that the girlfriend can drive if she needs to (automatic, unfortunately)
Came across this, a well written ad, which the seller replied to me saying that he just had a headlight & sensor replaced. Seems like a decent buy? And, it’s closely to me so I may go try and look at it today.
Anyone have experience with this year / engine / model? Feedback?

Not that model, but experience with that year VW. That’s not a time that company was known for quality and reliability. Never left me stranded, but frequent costly upkeep.

Looks to be an extremely reasonable price to me. I cannot say about issues though, I don’t have much experience in VWs.
Tell me more about those smart cars.. :D

My cousin has a similar one and likes it. She doesn’t drive a lot though so less chance of issues. Hers is the same color.

I like VW and think they get a harsher wrap than deserved in general but the 2011 jettas for whatever reason do have more problems than 2009-10 and 2012.
The 2.5 is durable from what I’ve heard and has a timing chain. It also responds fairly well to mods if you’re into that sort of thing.

I have a guilty pleasure for the 2.5. ive had techs say its among the better ones for longevity. plus they sound cool.

hahaha the Car2Go service here in NYC. They’re convenient as hell for around the town trips, but still add up for sure

Wouldn’t put too many miles either - it’d be a weekend trip car

My SIL drove a 2006 Jetta with the 2.5 5 banger. Got it near 200k miles. Traded it in when the heated seats caused a fire :X

Haha, I wish! Looks like the one I’m looking at is a pre-facelift model, so sticks with the twist beam suspension. Hmm...

What kinds of issues? & yeah, was very relieved to hear when I read it has a chain instead of a belt, since at 120k it would’ve needed to be taken care of now.
Still on the fence...

The engine is great but make sure you’re flushing the auto at least once every 80000 Miles. Otherwise it can become problematic.

Work has an 07. It’s soooooooo boring...any ideas how to *ahem* increase the odds of that fire?

I don’t know what model they sold in the US; here in Mexico we got drum brakes and twist beam for a very long time.
I think that the early models in the US did too, except the SEL and the GLI

interesting. Wonder if this has already been done @ 80k. Would leave me with another 40k before it’d have to be done again theoretically

Yep, same in the US. Rear drums & torsion beam suspension on anything that wasn’t an upper model

I mean it’s not bad, it’s just that they made an economy car in a large package; not a car to be driven fast!
